Redefining strength at any age. Power, focus, and a little fun, midlife is my prime.

They told us we needed meat to be strong.

That aging inevitably meant slowing down.

That strength and softness could not coexist gracefully within one body.

They were wrong.

Strength and softness can live in the same body. Stillness and motion, all at once.

Choosing a Plant-Based Life

For over two decades, I have embraced a plant-based lifestyle, not because it was trendy or restrictive, but because it authentically reflects how I choose to move through the world. Compassion, clarity, and care guide how I nourish myself, how I interact with others, and how I live my life each day.

Movement Through the Years

Movement has always been integral to my identity. As a child and teenager, ballet instilled grace and discipline, while volleyball sparked a lifelong passion for strength and teamwork. I was an athlete long before I ever set foot in a gym.

In my twenties, I discovered weightlifting and fell in love with the empowering feeling of building strength. Over the years, my movement practice evolved, incorporating Yoga, Pilates, Barre, TRX, Spinning, and long hikes. Each chapter brought new rhythms and discoveries. Recently, I have come full circle, returning to strength training, embracing heavier weights again, and invigorating my routine with kickboxing.

Now, in my forties, I feel more vibrant, resilient, and alive in my body than ever before. Friends sometimes kindly remark that I look even better now than a decade ago. What truly matters, though, is how I feel within. I am stronger, clearer, and profoundly more connected to myself.

The Protein Myth in Midlife: Why Plant-Based Strength Is Possible

For years, women were told that animal protein was essential for building strength, especially in midlife. But current research offers a more hopeful and empowering perspective.

We now know that plant-based protein can support muscle growth and strength just as effectively as animal protein, as long as overall intake is adequate and paired with regular movement. One major review found that women who consumed more plant protein were healthier, more active, and less likely to develop chronic illness as they aged (see the study). Another large meta-analysis confirmed that it is the total amount of protein, and your commitment to movement, that matters most, not the source (read more here).

Leading health authorities agree. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states that a thoughtfully planned plant-based diet is nutritionally adequate at all stages of life, including midlife, menopause, and during athletic training. You can find a helpful overview in this Harvard Health summary.

The real takeaway?

It is not about choosing sides. It is about choosing what nourishes you, supports your goals, and reflects your values. When you eat with care, consistency, and intention, your body can thrive, no matter your stage of life.

Nourishing My Body with Intention

Completing the Whole Food Plant-Based Nutrition program at eCornell deepened my understanding of intentional nourishment. While I do not obsessively track macros, research indicates women in midlife benefit from approximately 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily.

My staples include lentils, tofu, tempeh, quinoa, edamame, and hemp seeds, not simply as protein sources, but as vibrant sources of strength, vitality, and renewal.

To optimize iron absorption, I pair lentils and leafy greens with vitamin C-rich foods. Pumpkin seeds, kale, almonds, walnuts, and hemp seeds are foundational, supporting vitality with essential minerals and offering calming nourishment.

When craving indulgence without compromise, I created Nuteese, a flavorful, carefully aged, artisanal vegan cheese crafted intentionally, free of fillers, and brimming with care.

Eating Out as a Vegan

Navigating dining out as a vegan continues to have its challenges, yet the landscape is rapidly transforming. Chefs are becoming more innovative, menus more inclusive, and even the simplest plant-based dishes feel incredibly satisfying when they resonate with your values. French fries, admittedly, still have my heart.

Real Plant-Based Strength

We are not alone. Renowned athletes such as Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton, Olympic sprinter Morgan Mitchell, footballer Chris Smalling, tennis legend Venus Williams, marathon runner Fiona Oakes, Olympic cyclist Dotsie Bausch, bodybuilder Nimai Delgado, ultrarunner Scott Jurek, and track icon Carl Lewis all exemplify the extraordinary power of plants. Their success is living proof that plant-based strength is not a passing trend, but a genuine and thriving reality.

This truth extends beyond the world of elite athletes. Two of my friends, one my age and another vibrant woman in her sixties, are also committed to a plant-based lifestyle. Both remain active, healthy, and absolutely radiant. Their journeys remind me every day that plant-based living nourishes us at every stage of life and can be accessible, joyful, and deeply rewarding for anyone.

What Strength Means in Midlife

Strength in midlife is not about proving oneself to the world. It is about reconnecting with the essence of who you truly are.

Strength does not diminish femininity. It amplifies and celebrates it.

Kickboxing sharpens my mental clarity.

Yoga and Pilates enhance openness and resilience.

Hiking grounds me in mindful stillness.

I no longer train to change my body. I train to remain intimately connected with it.

Strength is not the antithesis of softness. It is what flourishes when softness is honored and protected.

Midlife is a homecoming: to nature, to those you cherish, and to the self you may have outgrown but are now ready to remember.

It Is Not Too Late

It is never too late to build strength, change how you nourish yourself, or rediscover a deeper sense of vitality. Wherever you are on your journey, you can always begin again.

Your body is listening closely.

Your strength continues to unfold beautifully.

You do not need animal protein to thrive.

You need no permission to evolve.

Midlife strength is shaped by kindness, nourished by plants, guided by gentleness, and deepened by the wisdom you have gathered along the way. Above all, this strength is yours to define, uniquely, gracefully, tenderly, and beautifully.

If this resonated, stay tuned, I’ll be sharing exactly how I build muscle, eat plants, and feel stronger than ever in my next post
